There had to have been countless times when doctors and those involved in medicine in ancient times would say, “If only I could look inside my patient and see what was going on!” We live in a time when seeing inside our patients is not just possible, but becoming more common, especially with the assistance of Point of Care Ultrasound.
Point of Care Ultrasound is becoming more commonly used throughout the medical field and even beyond the four walls of the hospital and professional buildings where doctors, nurses, and technicians do a majority of their work. One of the many promising ways POCUS is being used, by our Maverick Medical Education trainees and medical professionals across the country, is the use in identifying and working through cardiac issues with our patients.
Maverick Medical Education is committed to teaching different forms of pain relief in our courses, but also ensuring that our students receive all the tools and skills they need for each encounter with a patient to be successful. Through repetition in our courses like our Regional Anesthesia Essentials and Advanced, students get the hands on experience they need to build proficiency, but we also use additional tools, like ultrasound for perfect placement, every time.
As Point of Care Ultrasound becomes more widely used, those who have been trained in using this technology, also referred to as POCUS, will be better able to diagnose and treat their patients. While many think of ultrasound only in the realm of obstetrics, POCUS can give great insight into what is taking place within a patient’s body, in real time, without transport and can give an ongoing view as different techniques or treatments are tried. One of the ways Maverick Medical Education uses POCUS with medical professionals is in the identification of knee dislocation.
Maverick Medical Education isn’t just passionate about teaching others pain relief methods. We are also passionate about making medical providers better versions of themselves, adding new knowledge, techniques, and trade tips that will serve the patients at each of their practices even better after the completion of one, or all, of our courses. Even those of us in the medical field have had the awkward experience of being handed an ultrasound image of someone’s new baby and having to pause and think about what we may be looking at. The marvel of ultrasound, whether for pregnancies, guiding equipment, or monitoring progression of a medical concern, is clear. We can take a look inside the bodies of our patients with a simple wave of the hand, or, in this case, wand. How do we interpret those images though? Maverick Medical Education is learning more about ultrasound and how to assist patients in numerous fields, every day.
When Maverick Medical Education looks for courses to offer to medical professionals around the country, we are considering what may best serve patients and communities. Pain management and relief techniques have always been a part of what drives our educators, but as we saw more and more techniques better performed with ultrasound assistance, we realized that there was a valuable tool in Point of Care Ultrasound, or POCUS, as well. This nimble diagnostic tool can be used in any field and offers medical staff the chance to quickly assess what is taking place inside a patient’s body, with the ability to understand how that patient is progressing throughout their stay. POCUS is versatile in how it can treat and help the patients we serve today and tomorrow.

Point of Care Ultrasound continues to assist in the medical practice in a number of ways. Not only does POCUS allow for better imaging and diagnosis from the start, but the ability for imaging to continue to take place during and after a procedure is crucial to patient outcomes. Maverick Medical Education sees application for POCUS in numerous ways and urges all medical practitioners to become familiar with how this technology can benefit patients in all fields. POCUS can help significantly with identifying and treating a fairly common clinical presentation, shoulder dislocation.
In an ongoing attempt by Maverick Medical Education to partner with and train medical providers across the country on pain management techniques, our team has learned about what works, what doesn’t, and everything in between. By diligent practice and research, we can help reduce the number of opioids prescribed to patients by utilizing alternative methods for pain reduction. Occasionally, there are adjustments to be made in very common blocks, like the femoral nerve block, that will make everyone more effective.
