Venous access complications are common. Landmark-based techniques increase risk. Ultrasound changes everything— when providers know how to use it.

Ultrasound guidance ensures clinicians can see the vessel, guide the needle, and place lines with efficiency, accuracy and confidence. This one day hands-on ultrasound training is designed to help clinicians accurately and safely place Midlines and PICC lines.

Through the combination of online didactic modules, hands-on practice Maverick’s proprietarily embalmed cadavers, and live models, participants will refine their skills under the guidance of experienced instructors providing a well-rounded and immersive learning experience.

This course is not a typical “death-by-PowerPoint” lecture. The modules are filled with interactive presentations, ultrasound videos, assessments, knowledge checks, and landmark target practice activities. These modules are asynchronous allowing participants to take the course at their own pace and at their own location.

The modules were developed by experienced and currently practicing CRNAs, education experts in pedagogy from Texas A&M University, and instructional designers.

*Participants must complete the online didactic modules before attending the hands-on cadaver lab.

Over the course of one day, participants apply lessons from the online didactic modules to experiential training exercises in a clinical environment, developing confidence and proficiency in placing Midlines and PICC lines. Multiple instructors will guide participants with individualized one-on-one direction throughout the lab covering all steps and techniques necessary to perform catheter insertion.

Participants will use live human models to develop their skills in identifying landmarks for catheter insertion. Multiple gel phantoms will be utilized by participants to practice scanning out-of-plane and in-plane to locate and place a needle for venous access. Participants train with Maverick’s proprietarily embalmed cadavers to maximize realism via their life-like feel and real life replication of performing ultrasound scanning and line placement on a patient.

Online Didactic Module Components

The Online Didactic Modules cover the following information about ultrasound use and operation:

  • Fundamentals of how ultrasounds work
  • Proper probe placement & positioning
  • Techniques for scanning out-of-plane & in-plane
  • Acoustic impedance of different materials, fluids, and biology
  • Identifying anatomy under ultrasound
  • Avoiding ultrasound artifacts

The Online Didactic Modules cover the following information about Venous Access:

  • Purpose & Benefits of Venous Access
  • Anatomy of the Upper Arm Venous System
  • Benefits & Risks of Midline Catheters
  • Benefits & Risks of PICCs
  • Midline & PICC Insertion Using Modified Seldinger Technique
    • Pre-Procedure Preparation
    • Necessary Equipment
    • Procedure: From Vein Puncture to Catheter Insertion
    • Post Insertion Care

Hands-On Lab Structure

The Hands-On Lab is a one day event where participants apply all the knowledge gained from working through the online modules by practicing and developing their skills on gel phantoms, live models, and Maverick’s patented pulsatile cadavers.

The Hands-On Lab will include the following components:

  • Expert individualized guidance by experienced Maverick instructors
  • Practice ultrasound scanning and venous access on gel phantoms
  • Scanning and anatomy identification on a variety of live models
  • Individual PICC & Midline Catheter insertion on specially embalmed cadavers
  • Check offs by instructors verifying participants can correctly perform PICC & Midline insertion
